Large-scale karst simulations
A database with hundreds of time series of observed karst spring discharge and karst catchment discharge has been established, and the forcing data for the large-scale karst modelling is readily available. This enables to develop and apply a global karst simulation model to estimate the water stress under climate and land use change projections. Research focuses are on the determination of the optimal model structures for the large-scale modelling and upscaling the catchment-scale models to global-scale studies.
Transport of sediments and pollutants in rivers
In industrialized countries, water quality concerns of a river have shifted from nutrients and industrial contaminants to micropollutants in recent years, e.g., hydrophobic compounds (such as PAH and PCB) and pharmaceuticals. The transport of hydrophobic pollutants is facilitated by sediment transport. The transient storage influences the fate of dissolved contaminants in streams. Understanding the long-term fate of sediment-bound micropollutants (e.g. PAH) and the transport and transformation dynamics of dissolved micropollutants (e.g. pharmaceuticals) is useful to develop appropriate river management strategies and provides insights to evaluate their environmental exposure to river systems.
